Plenary Speaker: Richard Swinburne (Oxford University)

I'm happy to announce the 5th Biennial University of Rochester Graduate Epistemology Conference.

It will be held Friday-Saturday, October 10th-11th on the beautiful campus of the University of Rochester, hosted by the Philosophy Department.

The main speaker is Alvin Goldman and Richard Feldman will be commenting.

The call for paper is here.

James Beebe (Prosblogion contributor) recently delivered the first set of lectures in the Young Philosophers Lecture Series at SUNY Fredonia.

His introductory level talk should be of interest to Prosblogion readers. It was on The Fine-Tuning Argument for God's Existence.

Also, we posted the Fall 2008 Call for Papers (deadline: August 15th)

Young Philosophers Lecture Series

This will be of interest to Young Philosophers of Religion.

I just secured some funding to start a Young Philosophers Lecture and Podcast Series. The call for papers is up at www.youngphilosophers.org

SUNY Fredonia’s philosophy department will bring two young philosophers to campus each semester. Each philosopher will give two talks. The first talk will be a research talk pitched to the philosophical community. The second talk will be a shorter talk that is accessible to a broad audience with no background in philosophy.

The Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at the University of Oxford will host a conference entitled "God, Nature and Design: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives" July 10th - 12th 2008. Speakers will include John Hedley Brooke, Ron Numbers, Michael Ruse and Richard Swinburne.

The official Call for Papers can be found here. Possible topics include the argument from design in its historical or contemporary forms, divine activity in nature, debates about intelligent design, fine-tuning arguments, and the implications of evolutionary thought for theistic interpretations of nature.

I just noticed that Alistair McGrath is organizing an international conference on natural theology, to be held in Oxford next June. Details can be found here. Speakers include Justin Barrett, Jeremy Begbie, John Hedley Brooke, Simon Conway Morris, Hilary Fraser, Peter Harrison, John Haught, Alistair McGrath, Richard Swinburne, and Keith Ward.

They have also issued a Call for Papers. The deadline for submissions in Nov. 15th. I wish I had something to submit.

Central Division Meeting of the SCP

CALL FOR PAPERS

Central Division Meeting of the Society of Christian Philosophers

May 8-10, 2008 â—? Union University â—? Jackson, Tennessee

Conference Theme: Engaging Eastern Thought

SCP: Eastern Regional Meeting

Theme: Options and Issues in Applied Ethics

Location: Niagara University
Dates: April 18-19, 2008

Papers on any topic of philosophical interest will be considered, with some preference given to papers that connect with the conference theme. We are especially interested in papers dealing with issues of social responsibility and teleology in relation to applied ethics. However, we would like a broad range of philosophical interests represented. Participation is welcomed from both Christians and non-Christians.

The Philosophical Quarterly invites submissions for its 2007 international prize essay competition, the topic of which is 'Aspects of Theism'

Essays are invited that consider arguments for or against the central claims of (mono)theism; that explore its meaning, including its conceptual or propositional content, and its broader significance; or which connect it with issues in other areas of philosophy, such as metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, philosophy of value, and political and social philosophy.

While it may be appropriate to consider ideas drawn from historical figures, essays should address problematic issues rather than be studies in the history of philosophy.

Similarly, while ideas of contemporary thinkers may be examined, essays should aim to do more than provide critical discussions of current work.

The closing date for submissions is 1st November 2007

2007 Theme: Justice

Of the classical virtues, justice is the most the basic for human flourishing and the most elusive to define and to realize in society. The 2007 conference is the first in a series of four conferences on the cardinal virtues. We invite papers examining the meaning, history, and practical implications of the idea of justice as a virtue. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
