As an atheist and a philosopher, I must express my dismay that a great man and profound intellectual like Alvin Plantinga is departing the field. Not only was he the subject of my undergraduate thesis, he was and continues to be the most thought-provoking, most rigorous, most consistently impressive Christian philosopher I encounter in my readings. Much as I hate to put it in these terms, Plantinga is the worthiest adversary that philosophical atheism has had in a long time and I consider all of us in philosophy of religion the worse off for his departure. I wish him the best, but he will certainly be missed.

I don't think he's departing the field. He continues working on issues (last I heard, anyway) in science and religion.
