According to the preview of the new Philosophy Gourmet Report here, Saint Louis University is now ranked as the best department to study Medieval philosophy in the US. You go Billikens!

Thanks for this, Kevin. There was a flurry in the philosophy office here at SLU about it, with 2 of us coming in at once with the news.
After being removed from the schools to be ranked for the 2004-6 report, it feels great to get back on the report, and to come back in style!
In the '04 rankings, SLU wasn't on the survey, and so couldn't be put into any of the "groups" in the specialty areas. For at least a couple of areas -- medieval & phil. of religion are the ones I know about -- the PGR advisory board listed them as "other programs to consider." I think a lot of readers assumed this meant that they weren't as good in the areas as the programs up in the various groups. But that was a false assumption. You had to be in the survey to get into groups; SLU was doing as good as possible, given that they weren't in the surveys. In the new '06 PGRs, SLU was in the surveys, so they can show up in the groups in the specialty rankings.
Interesting, Keith. I think that you are correct that this was a common (even if false) assumption.
